CONGRESSMAN CHET EDWARDS SUPPORTS BIPARTISAN TAX CUT AGREEMENT
(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Chet Edwards released the following statement in support of the bipartisan tax cut agreement outlined by the President:
“I will most likely support the bipartisan tax agreement, because this is not
the time, given our sluggish economy, to be raising taxes. I hope the
business and payroll tax cuts will encourage investment and consumption, because growing the economy is the fastest way to reduce unemployment and deficits in the short run.
However, this bill must be combined with Congress passing early next year a long-term deficit reduction plan. Our capital markets understand short-term deficits during a slow economy, but long-term economic growth will not happen unless there is a credible plan to cut long-term spending and deficits.”
Edwards is a senior member of both the House Budget and Appropriations Committees
